“Everything during our stay was good in terms of the facilities and the friendly staff. BUT… It’s the first time I ever stayed at a hotel that added a large gratuity onto the stay at check out time. It was shocking really. I booked a rate that “included” some services, and although I didn’t use any unpacking or ironing service, they were supposedly in the package rate. Then at check out, there was a huge additional service charge that was based on a percentage of the rate! Don’t the room rates include front desk and bellman and housekeeping staffing?! The charge seems like paying their salary versus a tip. We did tip the doormen, etc in cash, and didn’t know we’d also be charged a “service fee” for all of the hotel employees as a percentage of the room rate! Anyway, it was excessive, and no one had informed us. I won’t stay there again. It felt exploitative of their guests. It definitely gave the lasting impression of not being service-minded, but money-driven as a hotel. My rate booked was the highest rate there was, and there was no indication before departing that they were expecting even more!”
